Unrecognized Groups

We would like to advise all students and parents/guardians that there are groups of University students that wrongfully attempt to function and are not recognized by the University. For your own well-being, we discourage you from attending their events and from affiliating with these organizations.
Unrecognized groups of University students include:

They call themselves: They used to be: Year removed:
ATO Alpha Tau Omega 2002
Delta Sig Delta Sigma Phi 2001
Kappa Sig Kappa Sigma 1997
Phi Delt Phi Delta Theta 1998
Sammies Sigma Alpha Mu 1995, 2001
ZBT Zeta Beta Tau 2002

The University at Buffalo does not advise nor control the actions of these off-campus groups. Typically, the instances of hazing are high for these groups as well. Affiliation with these groups is a violation of the UB Student Code of Conduct and puts students at risk for suspension and/or expulsion from the University. University policy, effective fall 2004, in accordance with SUNY policy changes, mandates a permanent transcript notation for students who are found to be responsible for hazing incidents that involve the injury of another person.

These groups have been advised by the University and their former National Headquarters to cease ALL operations, including recruitment, education, induction of new members, and the sponsoring of and/or participation in on or off-campus programs. Failure to abide by these conditions on campus will subject students to on-campus judicial proceedings. All activities are subject to litigation by the legitimate national organizations.

As a student, if you are recruited by or have questions about unrecognized student groups, please contact Greek Affairs at (716) 645-2055 or email us. For information about recognized fraternities and sororities on campus, please click on Member Organizations above.
